The process of executing Jeff Ocheltrees’ design is what really sets the TreeBronze snares apart from the normal procedure of drum building. The combination of repeatedly heating and cleaning the shell affects the molecular structure of the shell itself, the brass lugs, and the cast bronze hoops. All bearing edges and snare beds are hand done with five different types of sharpening stones, ending with bronze on bronze. This attention to edges and snare beds assures even contact of the heads with increased sensitivity and power.
The process of applying the finish is also different. Unlike other finishes (such as chrome or nickel) that basically sit on the outside of the shell or lug. the color is in the bronze. In keeping with the tradition of the bronze SCULPTERS , a patina is used . Almost a “staining process”, it gets into the molecular structure and becomes part of the bronze shell itself, allowing it to resonate freely.
This is all done with natural minerals, heat, and a whole lot of elbow grease! All “relief” is done by hand to give them the “old world look” you just can’t get by tumbling lugs or machining. All components are then sealed, the drum is assembled & tested, and then sent to Jeff Ocheltree to inspect for quality control. There it receives a custom serial number and is signed and tuned by the best in the business.
The Drum Tree TreeBronze project has been both an honor and a labor of love!
